The best gin and tonic in Stockholm
Updated 21 May 2019
A classic gin and tonic really only consists of two ingredients; gin and tonic water. But it takes knowledge and experience to make a G&T taste as crisp and fresh as we like. These days we seldom drink a G&T that doesn't include some other ingredients too, and the variations are endless. The most popular addition was lemon for many years, but a few years ago cucumber and peppar became all the rage. Today, you can find all kinds of ingredients in your G&T and lots of bartenders like to put their own personal stamp on this popular drink. We've scanned Stockholm's bars and restaurants to find the city's best gin and tonic.
Lilla Nygatan 5, Old Town
Back to old England
The mixologists at Tweed are self-confessed die-hard cocktail romantics who live to serve up creative cocktails. Take a pew in one of the Chesterfield armchairs and choose from the drinks menu. The selection of spirits is as timeless as the interiors, but though you're naturally welcome to order an old-school classic, the options are limitless.
Kungsgatan 16, Norrmalm/City
A drink before or after the movie
You'll find this French-inspired bistro right next door to the Rigoletto cinema. They proudly stock one of the largest selections of gin in Stockholm, as well as gin and tonic variations. Take a seat at the long bar, on one of the velvet sofas or outside on the pavement seating area, looking over the square.
Hornsbruksgatan 24, Hornstull/Södermalm
A G&T for each day of the week
Thirsty guests, both locals and visitors, flock to Tjoget's two bars every day of the week, for a beer, glass of wine, or top notch cocktail. Their bartenders will do their very best to fulfil your every drinking desire, so choose whichever type of gin you prefer and add whatever ingredients you're in the mood for - how about lime, apple syrup or homemade Patxaran, for example?
Smålandsgatan 7, Norrmalm/City/Östermalm
Historic watering hole since the Thirties
Konstnärsbaren was originally a watering hole for famous artists and actors, but these days the older regulars mingle with a motley mix of businesspeople, media types, theatre visitors, artists, actors and ordinary, everyday folk. Eat classic Swedish homecooking or have a drink at the bar - not surprisingly at a classic joint like this, G&Ts have a permanent spot on the drinks menu.
Södra Blaiseholmshamnen 8, Norrmalm/City
Luxurious, peaceful surroundings
Cadierbaren, inside the Grand Hôtel Stockholm, has one of the most beautiful interiors in Stockholm, with views over the Royal Palace and the harbour to match. The bar oozes luxury, and a crisp and refreshing classic gin and tonic suits the surroundings perfectly.
Krukmakargatan 22, Södermalm
Just like Paris
You'll find this red-clad bar with well-appointed drinks shelves inside Delikatessen Bistro Bar. Behind the counter, the bartenders impress with their knowledge of wines and ability to create both classic and creative cocktails. You can order your gin and tonic just as you like it, from a wide range of different gins.
Stortorget 7, Old Town
Former apothecary in the Old Town
Sweden's oldest apothecary was once housed in this very spot, some 400 years ago, hence the name. You can eat and drink here, but the emphasis is very much on drinking - and food is chosen to be paired accordingly. Fresh ingredients, herbs and botanicals dominate here; an "Alter ego", with Hendrick's Gin, grapefruit- and rose tonic and coffee foam, is among the cocktails on the menu.
Sankt Eriksgatan 102, Vasastan
High cocktail ambitions
20hundra5 has been nominated for numerous bartending awards. It has a cosy, homely atmosphere, with a mish-mash of different tables, chairs and comfy sofas. You can play Play Station or a board game up on the top floor while you snack on tacos and sip a cocktail.
Tegelbacken 6, Norrmalm/City
Sheraton Stockholm Hotel's hotel bar oozes cosmpolitan vibes in the heart of the city, and naturally you can always order a G&T here. On Thursdays, they serve different variations on a classic Gin and Tonic - perfect for anyone who wants to try something new.
Skånegatan 79, Södermalm
Social dining, Swedish-style
Agrikultur began as a small restaurant on Roslagsgatan where fine, Swedish ingredients were served in a tasting menu. Bar Agriktultur is on Nytorget, and you can enjoy the same experience here but in a slightly different, simpler form. You can order several small dishes to share, and they recommend accompanying them with their favourite gin.
Tullhus 2, Skeppsbrokajen, Old Town
Glamorous setting with unbeatable views
One of the best possible spots to be in Stockholm in the summertime, Mister French serves a wide selection of fish and shellfish, as befits its waterside setting. Stockholmers and tourist in-the-know flock here for cocktails in a party atmosphere, inside and out. Sip a gin and tonic to the sounds of DJs and live bands.
Grev turegatan 11, Östermalm
Fun glasses and jolly G&Ts
You'll stroll past Tures, with its sunny outdoor seating and light indoor dining area, in Sturegallerian shopping galleria when you come in from Grev Turegatan. It's always busy and lively and you'll often find crowds of hungry shoppers queuing up for a Toast Skagen or moules frites. It's a little known fact that they also offer nine different kinds of gin and tonic, with ingredients including marmelade, rosmary, elderflower and red apple.
Strandvägen 7c, Östermalm
This hotel on Strandvägen doesn't just provide top-notch accommodation and gastronomy; cocktails and other good drinks are also on offer. Take a seat in the lounge or the restaurant on the ground floor, or head up to the cocktail bar on the upper floor. Enjoy classic gin and tonics, with a twist if you prefer, in sophisticated surroundings.
Mäster Samuelsgatan 4, Norrmalm/City/Östermalm
The bar at Prinsen restaurant is, as they put it, a living room, which you're warmly welcome to pop into. Enjoy the classic cocktails that Hemingway himself liked to drink, as well as some more modern cocktails. The drinks are inspired by Hemingway's travels to Havana and Paris.
Strömgatan 14, Norrmalm/City
At the Opera house
How does gin, Cocci Americano, soya milk, lime, green tea, syrup and nutmeg sound? Among Brasseriet's signature cocktails you'll find this creation, going by the name of "Sthlm Tea Party" - an innovative gin-based cocktail which has gone a bit maverick and lost its tonic. Naturally, you can also order a classic G&T too, to be enjoyed either in the magnificent bar, or out on the stunning terrace.
Biblioteksgatan 21, City/Östermalm
When Arnold's opened on Stureplan their huge, eye-catching gin and tonic became an instant Instagram hit and many guests go there just to order the photogenic cocktail. In addition to cocktails, their menu focuses on exotic fish and shellfish dishes.
