The LBTQ+ guide to Malmö's best gay spots

In the absence of purely gay bars, four people started Malmö Guerrilla Queer Bar. Once a month, queers and allies gather at a predetermined bar to make it a little more queer for the evening. The aim is to keep Malmö's queer community alive, network, have fun and get to know new people while exploring new places to hang out together. Keep an eye on their Facebook group to find out where the next hangout will be.

Sauvage wine bar and restaurant is another open-minded spot, inspired by contemporary Parisan bistros. This means reasonable prices, innovative cooking, a relaxed atmosphere and international influences. The menu is on the shorter side and includes snacks and main courses, and there are plenty of interesting wines to discover.

This popular club isn't purely queer, but welcomes all kinds of people to hang out, enjoy music, live gigs and dancing, and usually attracts an open-minded, creative crowd. They also hold occasional events such as theme nights and drag-queen bingo.

SLM Malmö is a members' club for men who like men and male fetishes. The venue is located between Ellstorp and Katrinelund and holds pub nights and cruising evenings. Keep an eye on the website for information on dress codes and programme calendar.

Café Jesusbaren has a relaxed, laid-back atmosphere. All kinds of things happen here; the café is inspired by Latin American baroque literature and has hosted everything from live concerts and talks to the Malmö Queer Film Festival.

Lesbian power lay dormant for a while, but resurfaces every now and then with everything from lesbian breakfasts to parties and talks. They exist for anyone who thinks it's interesting or fun to hang out in an environment where lesbianism is the norm.

This meeting place is for anyone 13 to 19 years old and gay, bi, trans, queer or curious. RFSL Skåne supports the initiative, and everyone who works at HaBiTat Q is a LGBTQI person who is there to hang out, support, listen, encourage and talk about everything and anything.

Page 28 is a cultural society and bookstore for LGBTQ+ people and was started with the aim of becoming part of Malmö's queer cultural life. They want to offer a queer breathing space for LGBTQ people who love culture but are "tired of hetero nonsense and cisnormative narratives". They do this by promoting and creating more culture by and for LGBTQ+ people.

Whether you want to spend an entire evening on the dance floor, go to a concert, see a theatre performance, listen to a lecture or eat dinner, head to Moriskan in Folkets Park. There's always an open atmosphere and occasional events aimed at queer people.

Inkonst is a meeting place for performing arts, music, contemporary art and culture, looking to explore and move outside the established, self-evident and genre-defined. It's not overtly queer, but takes an open and curious look at the outside world and focuses on art that transgresses boundaries, plays, challenges and takes risks. They aim to be a welcoming space for the unusual and different, where you can step outside your usual limits.

For a few days every summer, the city is dressed in rainbow colours and offers activities, music, conversations and meet-ups for and by queers, the curious and allies. Aimed at promoting LGBTQ+ rights through culture, education and celebration, the festival ends with a bang as the parade winds its way through town.

The name says it all – this is a film festival for and about lgbtqia+. Handpicked short films, documentaries, artists and immortal classics are shown here, all queer. The film festival usually takes place sometime in the spring.
