Bleeding Heart Yard is a non-descript courtyard in Farringdon that is said to have a terrible past. According to legend, it was named after the brutal 17th century murder of Lady Elizabeth Hatton, whose heart was supposedly torn out and left on the cobbles, still pumping blood. Though historical records disagree – Lady Hatton apparently died of natural causes, and the name likely refers to a pub that was once here – the name has stuck, and the yard still attracts budding ghostbusters hoping to catch a glimpse of Lady Hatton's spirit.
