Sometimes you need to leave the big city behind and head out into nature to relax and breathe. There are several nature reserves in Stockholm, both small and large, that are ideal for long hikes or a gentle stroll. The larger reserves have trails stretching several miles and in some places you can spend the night in a youth hostel, or camp in your own tent. Stockholm's nature reserves are well taken care of, meaning you can often discover historical remains such as rune stones and vestiges from the Ice Age. Whether you're looking for a complete nature experience or just want to get out of town for a bit, this guide will help you find the right spot for you. Nature reserves and walking trails in Stockholm

Nyckelvikens naturreservat

Rural oasis close to town

Nyckelviken nature reserve in Nacka is just quarter of an hour by bus from Slussen. There's lots to do and see for all ages among the leafy forest areas and cliffs. Visit the farm, take a swim from the sandy beach or walk along the hiking trails.

Judarskogens naturreservat

Vestiges of the Ice Age

If you look carefully enough you'll find 10,000 year old traces of the Ice Age in Judarskogen. There are masses of walking trails and paths, surrounded by frog ponds and rich birdlife. Try your luck at fishing in Lake Judar and perhaps catch a perch or two.

Activity-packed nature reserve

Despite its location close to the city, Nacka reserve is a true oasis. There are masses of fantastic walking trails of varying lengths and plenty of activties. At Hellasgården open-air meeting place you can rent canoes, fish, ski and pick mushrooms. There are also bathing areas in the reserve.

Långängen-Elfviks naturreservat

Leafy outdoor recreation area

The 440 hectare Långängen-Elfvik nature reserve in Lidingö has beautiful natural surroundings and a rich fauna. Spot birds, grill sausages, swim and hike - there's plenty to do here if you feel like getting out into nature.

Kyrksjölötens naturreservat

Fantastic walks

In Bromma, just ten minutes walk from Åkeshov underground station, Kyrksjölöten nature reserve has plenty of walking trails and flora and fauna to enjoy. If you look carefully you can see traces of the Ice Age traces in the form of large boulders.

Flatens naturreservat

Walk around the lake

This green nature reserve around Lake Flaten south of the city has several great walking paths. Differences in elevation around the trails mean you can climb and enjoy the beautiful view over the lake.

Södra Törnskogens naturreservat

Walking trails from Viking times

Södra Törnskogen nature reserve between Sollentuna and Upplands Väsby consists of leafy forest areas, lakes and mountains. If you want to hike there are several well-kept trails, where you can find rune stones from the 12th century.

Tyresta Nationalpark

Complete nature experience

Tyresta National Park stretches from Tyresö to Haninge and draws in both die-hard hikers and visitors looking for a gentle stroll in nature. The park's youth hostel means you can stay overnight if you want to prolong your nature experience.

Östra Järvafältets naturreservat

Farm, forest and activities

Östra Järvafältet nature reserve is one of the largest in the Stockholm region. There's masses to do here, including walking, riding, skiing and much more. There are public grills and you can say hello to the animals on the farm.
