The gluten-free trend has exploded in Stockholm over the past few years. Finding gluten-free options at restaurants, cafés and bakeries is no longer a problem - perfect for anyone with a gluten allergy, intolerance, or who chooses to avoid gluten for other health reasons. While gluten-free used to be associated with boring, dry breads and other foods, the selection of non-gluten items now includes plenty of delicious alternatives, including gluten-free pizza and pasta. To help you find the best spots, we've created this guide to gluten-free Stockholm.

Kindstugatan 1, Old Town
This charming café is tucked away behind a large chestnut tree in a little square in the Old Town. Food, bread and sweet treats are made and baked completely free of gluten in a separate allergy-adapted bakery. They serve food and cakes and pastries for gluten-intolerant guests from morning until evening.

Vegan joint with a gluten-free philosophy
Renée Voltaire's vegan café in Östermalm has lots to offer both health-conscious and gluten-free guests. How about gluten-free sandwiches made with buckwheat bread, buckwheat or teff porridge for breakfast, and delicious, protein-rich almond patties for lunch? They also serve cold-pressed juices, nut bars and raw food.

A konditori institution
The historic Vete-katten opened in 1928 and they continue to preserve the long Swedish tradition of konditoris. Bread and pastries are made from scratch from top quality, additive-free ingredients and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with a whiff of nostalgia. They have a wide range of gluten and lactose-free breads and pastries as well as diabetes-friendly products.

Healthy vegan café
A zeitgeisty health concept perfect for health nuts and anyone with food allergies. The emphasis is on organic ingredients and salads, wraps and trendy acai bowls are all on the menu. Treat yourself to a vegan sweet treat like "cheesecake" or nut balls made without refined sugar.
The Green Queen
Norr Mälarstrand 64, Kungsholmen
Green Queen, open only in the summer months, is inspired by the healthfood scenes in LA and NYC. "Clean food" is the order of the day - organic streetfood made without regined sugar - and everything they serve is gluten-free. Think buckwheat wraps, quinoa salads and grilled quesadillas with raw treats, accompanied by Fairtrade wine and organic vodka if you fancy a drink.

Newt's menu is nutritious, partly plant-based and everything is made on-site. There are also lots of options if you're lactose or gluten intolerant.

Giro, part of Miss Clara, creates artisan pizzas by bakers from Da Michele, Italy's best-known pizza bakers. Pizzas can all be made with gluten-free bases and are served in pared-back, Italian-influenced surroundings, with tiled floors and wood and brass touches.

Djuret, Leijontornet's sister restaurant, has a strict organic, nose-to-tail philosophy when it comes to the meat they serve. They serve one animal at a time, in various forms and accompanied by locally-produced, biodynamically grown vegetables. Perfect for gluten-intolerant meat-lovers.

Spring rolls, fishcakes, pho and rice noodles are just some of the dishes on the menu at Taste of Vietnam in Södermalm. You don't need to ask for gluten-free alternatives here - the entire menu is free from gluten and lactose, and many of the dishes are vegetarian. A top tip for anyone craving traditional Vietnamese food.
