The smart, somewhat sleepy northeastern part of the city is home to numerous traditional cafés and patisseries that have been around for generations. Filter coffee with free refills accompanied by classic cakes and buns is the norm in Östermalm and even the more recently opened cafés have embraced this traditional trend, while at the same time serving more innovative cakes and pastries, espresso drinks and modern hot dishes alongside. If you're lucky you might spot the odd celebrity or royal here, surrounded by locals, groups of friends, mums and dads with babies and four-legged friends. The modern decor, with its pink details, pouffes and colourful ceiling lamps, is stylish and eye-catching. Café with a restaurant feel
Crème is both a café and neighbourhood restaurant. Come for an excellent breakfast, lunch, fika, dinner or just a glass of wine. Crème has become a popular spot among Östermalm locals as well as media types and young people, which means it can get pretty packed around lunch time and after work. The menu is extensive, with a wide range of wines, sophisticated cocktails from the bar and international dishes.

This acclaimed café is run by Malin Eklund and Damien Foschiatti and it won a prestigious award for "Best café" in 2018. Their top quality bread, buns and French cakes and pastries have made them extremely popular and you can also come to eat breakfast, lunch and fika in cosy, modern surroundings.

You'll find one of Östermalm's best outdoor seating areas at Kavalleriet, just a stone's throw from Strandvägen and some of Stockholm's swankiest shopping streets. The café has a similar style to its sister establishments, Gast and Snickarbacken 7, with its pared-back, urban interiors and modern menu. Everything from open sandwiches to salads, breakfasts, coffee or a cold beer is available, and you can combine your visit with a cultural experience at Scenkonstmuseet (the Swedish Museum of Performing Arts) next door.

You'll find this Italian café/bar a stone's throw from Stureplan with a front row position looking out over Humlegården park. As well as an Italian menu consisting of everything from coffee to pasta, pizza, salads, charcuterie and sandwiches, L'angolo is also the perfect spot to enjoy a drink or two - an Aperol Spritz, maybe? - before or after dinner, accompanied by a live DJ.

This cosy café is tucked away behind one of the city's little inner countryards, its colourful facade covered in flowers. Sturekatten has been around since the 1700s and it retains its traditional style both inside and out. Their food and drink is similarly old-school, with plenty of classic cakes and pastries, pies, homebaked cinnamon buns, biscuits, sandwiches and coffee.

Next to Djurgårdsbron at the far end of Strandvägen, you'll find the Royal Motorboat Club (Kungliga Motorbåt Klubben) and its restaurant Strandvägen 56, which functions as a café during the daytime. Eat breakfast or a cup of coffee and bite to eat as you enjoy the views over the Djurgården canal and the boats passing by.

You'll find this popular café on Karlavägen in the heart of Östermalm. Healthy vegan dishes are the name of the game at Lilla P with everything from homemade breakfast and nutritious salads and delicious soups. The atmosphere and setting reflect the menu; both are modern yet thoughtful. In the summer months you can sit outside and people watch on one of Östermalm's busiest streets and in the winter you can take a pew by the bar counter or at one of the small café tables.
