Hallwyl Museum on Hamngatan in central Stockholm is a private palace from the turn of the 20th century, built by Wilhelmina von Hallwyl. She and her husband wanted the house, which was to be their winter residence, to be equipped with the very latest technology of the time. Electric lighting, central heating, running water and an elevator and telephone. Wilhelmina's large private art collection also required a great deal of space so they engaged one of the most famous architects of the time, Isak Gustaf Clason, to design the 2000 square metre palace.

The palace houses extensive collections of art and crafts, among them 17th century Dutch and Flemish paintings, silver, European china, Chinese ceramics, rugs and weapons, as well as the simple everyday objects of the time. The von Hallwyl couple's home opened up as a museum in 1938 after they donated the palace to the state in 1920. Since then time has stood still. The house looks exactly as it did when Wilhelmina von Hallwyl left it. A true historic gem in the heart of Stockholm city centre.

In addition to visiting the house itself and exploring rooms such as the dining room, smoking room, gun room and china room, you can join a guided tour which allows you to discover even more rooms and objects. They also offer dramatised tours and audio guides. During the school holidays they have special programmes for younger visitors.

If you get peckish, you can visit the restaurant, which serves food with Swedish and southern European flavours, as well as cocktails and wine to enjoy outside in the spacious inner courtyard.

Took a walking tour without a guide. Free and a nice time to replenish their cultural bank.
What impressed me is that a man-wife Wilhemina-gathered all of this.
Today she had been a candidate for Outsiders.
But large rooms (40 pcs of 2000 sqm) filled with kitsch from head to toe.

Det här är något alldeles ljuvligt förstår ni! Innergården är en parisisk fantasi, och hemmet med de guidade visningarna är så kul att besöka. Allt är välbevarat original! Extra impad över bowlingbanan (!) längst upp i huset.

Ett mycket väl planerad museum, med trevliga och kunniga guide.
