Where to find Gothenburg's best prawn sandwich
Updated 9 Jun 2021
For many, prawn sandwiches are synonymous with a visit to Gothenburg - if you're in town, you've got to eat at least one prawn sandwich. Opinions vary widely on how the perfect prawn sandwich should taste. Most agree on the basics - hand-peeled prawns, egg and mayonnaise - but after that it's a free for all. Traditional or with a modern twist? How much mayo? Salad or not? Classic rye bread or something lighter? We won't be drawn into that debate, but follow our guide to Gothenburg's best prawn sandwiches to help you find your particular favourite.
Heaven 23Mässans gata 22, Centrum
Sweden's best-known prawn sandwich
What may just be the most famous prawn sandwich in the country goes by the name of King Size and it's served high above the ground at Heaven 23. As the name suggests, it's on the large side - some 200 grams of hand-peeled Arctic prawns cover this celebrity sandwich. Since they opened in 1984, Heaven 23 has served more than two million prawn sandwiches and their popularity shows no signs of waning.
Långedrag VärdshusTalattagatan 24
Tuck into prawns on the water's edge
Where better to enjoy a prawn sandwich than by the sea? Långedrag Värdshus is right on the water's edge and it would be a crime if they didn't serve a really great prawn sandwich. Thankfully, they do, along with other top-notch seafood dishes. Simple, clean flavours and top-quality ingredients are the order of the day, and that applies to their prawn sandwiches, which are served on rye bread with dill mayo, egg and salad.

Modern twist on the sandwich
Gothenburgers have been gathering for delightful dinners at At Park for many years, even if the restaurant has changed name and form a few times over the years.
