Authentic and picturesque
If you've ever been to Greece and tucked into a selection of tasty snacks from a local taverna, you have an idea of what it's like to visit this authentic neighbourhood restaurant. Delicious food in substantial portions is served by friendly staff. How about a classic Souvlaki fish kebab for under 200 SEK, or why not choose a few smaller meze dishes. This dumpling concept works in the same way as fast-food restaurants. Order the filled dough knots by the three - around nine is usually enough for a meal. Traditional Chinese cuisine combines with our modern-day busy lifestyle in urban surroundings, complete with lots of concrete and blonde wood.

Bib Gourmand winner on Arkivgatan
In many ways Familjen comes under the fine dining category - but at much kinder prices than many other restaurants in this genre. The welcoming restaurant on Arkivgatan, right next to Avenyn, serves unpretentious food made from locally-produced ingredients. The restaurant has been awarded the Guide Michelin's Bib Gourmand, a distinction for restaurants that serve really good food at reasonable prices.

Award-winning and good-value fine dining
When Kock & Vin transformed into Koka, the prices went down a little and the menu became a little more flexible, without losing any of its quality. Koka has been awarded a star in the Michelin Guide for what they themselves call "modern West Swedish gastronomy". They serve tasting menus with either three, five or seven courses - which might just be one of the best-value fine dining experiences in the country.

Rustic burgers at great prices
Top grub at great prices is the order of the day at Tugg. The restaurant on Kyrkogatan serves burgers, sides and drinks over the counter in true fast-food joint style. The meat they use comes from selected farms and is freshly ground in their kitchen every morning. The unpolished concrete walls give a rustic feel which is enhanced by the restaurant's location right next to the harbour.

French neighbourhood restaurant vibes are never far away at this metro-tiled bistro. They serve classic bistro dishes such as moules marinière, as well as dishes with influences all over the world. Choose between half or full main course portions, depending on your hunger level and bank balance. The emphasis is on warmth and conviviality.

Swedish neighbourhood homecooking
This warm and welcoming neighbourhood restaurant is in the heart of the hip Majorna district. As the name suggests, the emphasis is on beer, with a huge selection of beers on tap and by the bottle from both local and further-afield breweries, but they also serve really good value traditional Swedish homecooking. For around 100 SEK you can fill up on hearty seasonal dishes.

This popular and busy restaurant in Linnéstaden, where Chinese dim sum takes centre stage, is a relaxed dinner joint with reasonable prices. The generous communal tables are perfect for sharing a selection of dishes, allowing you to experience a range of flavours. If your budget allows, why not move on to the bar after dinner for an exciting Asian fusion cocktail.

FolkOlof Palmes Plats 3, Linné
This completely vegetarian restaurant is right next to Folkteatern and comes from the same team as Dubbel Dubbel. The menu is based around smaller dishes that can be ordered individually or as a selection, depending on how hungry you are. Culture vultures, theatregoers and other diners meet here in the relaxed and intimate surroundings. During the summer months you can enjoy the views over Järntorget from the outdoor eating area.

Spicy and colourful
This popular, laid-back Indian is in the middle of Skanstorget in Linnéstaden. The decor is as colourful as the food, and you can eat authentic and flavourful dishes made in the traditional manner. Choose a Tandoori Chicken, for example, or the lamb dish Palaak Gosht, both under 150 SEK.

Since 1973, this charming neighbourhood restaurant has been serving up traditional Czech cuisine to hungry Gothenburgers. The large dining room, which is reminiscent of the beer halls of Prague, serves typical hearty dishes such as fried cheese and various kinds of schnitzel. And speaking of beer, they also have the city's largest selection of Czech beer on tap.
